Join historians and preservationists intimately connected to the history of New Chinatown to learn how this important cultural hub was woven with neon light since opening for business in 1938. We will gather inside the historic YC Hong building in New Chinatown Plaza, 100 years after You Chung Hong opened his first office in what was Old Chinatown (sited on the land that is now Union Station).

The event includes a talk, neon demonstration, and an exclusive tour of the YC Hong Office followed by further discussion outside in the New Chinatown Plaza. Ticket holders are then invited to enjoy cocktail hour at New Chinatown Plaza’s newest non-alcoholic watering hole STAY, the former site of the influential restaurant and punk hot-spot Hong Kong Cafe. Ticket does not include any purchases at STAY.

ADA INFORMATION (READ BEFORE PURCHASE): The first part of this event takes place on the second floor of a 1930’s era building. There is no elevator, this event is not ADA compliant. Staircase is wide and has a railing. If you have mobility issues we plan to offer a second event that does not involve stairs. Please let us know if you have interest in this so that we can give you the first option on reservations.

This project has been funded in part by a grant from the California Fund and Modernism and Recent Past Fund of the National Trust for Historic Preservation.
