On April 8, 2024 a total solar eclipse rips across the North American sky, blacking out the daylight and freaking out all the bugs and animals. For a short period of time the Sun’s super-hot, flickering edges become visible to the naked eye and light shifts purple. People say experiencing the total eclipse is life changing, reverent, 360° sunset.

Inspired by the transformative power of light and the upcoming total solar eclipse, this one-day neon bending workshop will introduce students to the craft of bending neon glass over flame and illuminating our hand-formed shapes with electric current. Join avant garde neon instructor Kacie Lees to bend circles and curves representative of this impending phenomena.

Participants can expect to leave with two units (1 circle + 1 arc).

About The Instructor
Kacie Lees (b. 1986 — St. Louis, Missouri, she/her) is a teaching artist who’s prismatic body of work examines themes of identity, environment, and access. Drawing from somatics, gestalt, and the sublime, Lees’ radical pedagogy often takes form as neon, holography, video, or print. Splitting her time between Brooklyn and Chicago, Lees teaches the craft of neon bending at both New York University and the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. She envisions a world where the power of light amplifies our humanity and expands the discourses of aesthetics, gender, and culture.
